1st Sunday of Advent

“Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life, and that day catch you by surprise like a trap. For that day will assault everyone who lives on the face of the earth. Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man.”
--Luke 21:34-36

H/t to the Curt Jester for the wreath.

I have to confess: I hate advent wreaths and I always have. I don't understand what they're for. Yes, ok, some kind of countdown thing. Big darn deal. It does not feel like an organic part of our liturgy.

Easter candles, yes. I get that. And the Easter fire. Yes. I get that. But Advent wreaths just seem artificial, even when they're made from real branches cut from real trees.

There I've said it.

Layla,

Hello!

Thank you for asking to take part in the 2007 Saint for the Year Devotion. I pray that through this devotion, all participants ultimately grow closer to God. You were chosen by St. Anselm.

Please let me know that you receive this message as well as any connections between your saint and you that you would like to share.
