Were you an idiot before you got your PhD too?
Me: "Well, for Catholics and the Orthodox churches, the Eucharist would be a more important religious symbol than just the cross"*
Professor: "What's the Eucharist? Is that a plant?"
Really, what do they teach them in these schools?
-------------
* For the record: we were discussing pictoral representations that one associates with Christian belief, not the theological nature of the sacrament, which the professor wouldn't have understood in the least.

Perhaps he was being deliberately opaque, in an attempt to test your knowledge of symbolism. For did not the Christ truly say that "I am the Vine and you are the Branches?" Therefore, if Jesus is the Vine, and the Vine is a Plant, Jesus is in some sense a Plant. And, additionally, if the Eucharist is Jesus' True Presence, and Jesus is in some sense a Plant, is the Eucharist not therefore, in some sense, also a plant?
While you make an amazingly inventive connection, there, I'm not sure I would give this particular professor that much credit. From the stories I've heard about him, he's not quite that clever...
I'll say it again. College is where smart guys go to become stupid.
